So... Decided to give this thing a go. I've been working on revamping a few of my gallery pieces, actually, but I started this one fresh for the contest because I thought it would turn out the most like the original in composition. (It kinda didn't. Shoot me.)
Some things of (not much) interest -
The original picture was my first digital drawing. (except for some MS paint stuff I did like, 15 years ago for school)
Drake (my character, up there...) His eyes don't really glow. The picture is supposed to be depicting him when he is not really himself. At the time, glowing eyes was the best I could do. For the new piece, I tried to use more subtle (but ultimately more creepy, imo) techniques to get this across.
The shirt he is wearing in the original was basically just so that I could draw him wearing straps and buckles and all that fun nonsense. I made up a good reason for it. Really. Since then, I have come to the realization that it is a stupid reason, and there is a good chance that this particular article of clothing will never actually show up should I ever get around to doing anything with him. I actually WAS going to draw it in the updated piece anyway, because I don't believe in changing too much for the "draw this again" stuff (because if you change a bunch of stuff, you aren't drawing it again, you are drawing something else. I'm not saying everyone else has to operate this way, it's just a quirk of mine), but when I started to put it in there, he looked to be wearing a dress.
His left ear in the new piece is messed up in accordance with updates to his design, and he has a few more scars.
"Drake" also happens to be my nickname that I picked up from online RPGs. The writing in the original piece is my signature, not an indication of the characters name.
That's about all of the useless things I can think to bring up... the only other change I really made was to get rid of the inappropriate extra space thing I had going on in the original. The original piece is just about exactly 4 years old... I used to think that it was decent. I kinda wish I could have my old eyes back, now I just think everything is terrible. =/
Update done in Paint Tool SAI, stock brushes, too many hours for one picture. Some things never change.
